City of Monroe

Monroe is the largest city and county seat of Monroe County.  The city is located approximately 14 miles north of Toledo, Ohio and 25 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.  Settled as early as 1784, the city was platted in 1817 and named after then-President James Monroe.  Today, the city has a strong sense of historic preservation and is remembered for the Battle of Frenchtown during the War of 1812. Monroe is also the childhood residence of George Armstrong Custer.  The city has numerous historic museums and landmarks.
