(Monroe News Photo/Jeff Brutsche) By Alex Alusheff As of Tuesday, November 4, 2014, 12:20 p.m. Target at Mall of Monroe will close on Jan. 1. The Monroe location is among 11 Target is closing as of Feb. 1, 2015 in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Georgia, Kansas, Iowa, Texas and Minnesota, according to a press release from Target. “We’re sorry to hear this and will certainly do what we must to support its operations until it closes,” said Joe Bell, director of corporate communications for Cafaro Co., the Youngstown, Ohio-based operator of the mall. Mr. Bell said prior to Target issuing a press release, Cafaro was unaware of plans to close the location. “We have a longstanding relationship with Target and they’ve been our tenant for quite a while,” Mr. Bell said. Target’s lease at the location is not close to expiring and Mr. Bell said it was supposed to continue well after 2015. The store opened in 1994 and occupies 96,800 square feet in the mall. Mr. Bell said they will begin looking for a new tenant to fill the space when Target leaves. Other Target closures in Michigan are in Northland and Bay City, according to the press release.
