J.R. Whiting Plant Acquired

We are excited that Forsite Development has been selected to demolish and redevelop the J.R. Whiting facility in Luna Pier. Monroe County BDC has worked with both Consumers Energy and a community engagement team since the inception of the decommissioning of the plant.

Forsite Development, Inc., based out of Charlotte, NC, is known for their successful track record of repurposing industrial property. They are a real estate development firm focused exclusively on acquiring corporate surplus industrial real estate. They provide companies solutions for divesting excess real estate and focus on transitioning properties to maximize their economic development potential, attracting new jobs and investments to the communities.

The BDC along with support from Consumers Energy has commissioned multiple studies surrounding potential future uses for the site. Our most recent effort, the I-75 Corridor Study, collaborates that Monroe County is quickly moving up the national ranks as a logistics and supply chain region. The future plans of Forsite Development to create a intermodal facility will certainly work to enhance our county as the place to locate businesses that need to take advantage of our road, rail and water transportation systems.
