Michigan Company Devises Program to Help Keep Power Plants Operational During COVID-19
March 30, 2020 – Michigan-based company Mid-American Group, has developed a program designed to help keep Power Plants operational during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program entitled “KEEPS” (Keep Essential Employees in Plants Safe), provides safe housing for essential employees to be able to stay and work at the plants.
Keith Masserant, President at Mid-American Group, said he is passionate about keeping employees safe and healthy in an industry that is critical to America. “Protecting the safety and security of our Power Plants is of utmost importance to America,” he said. “We designed this program to ensure that the workers who are essential to keeping the plants operational – those on the front lines every day to keep American safe -- have everything they need to keep themselves safe.”
In speaking with nuclear and fossil power plants across the country, the Mid-American Group (MAG) quickly recognized the need to develop fully operational protocols for personnel in the power and nuclear industry. MAG was challenged with finding a solution to keep essential workers sheltered, fed, and comfortable during the COVID-19 pandemic, all while putting health and safety in the forefront.
Now proven effective in several Power Plants, the KEEPS Program makes provisions for safe housing, common areas to gather in small groups, food service and medical checkpoints, among others.
“Our first challenge was to create housing and common areas that met the needs of workers, as well as, abiding by the CDC requirements of social distancing,” said Masserant. “We worked one-on-one to meet the needs of all groups involved. Starting with how to get workers into the plant without infecting others.” In response, MAG set up medical check points outside the plants, known as green and red zones. In this area medical personnel were able to safely and efficiently screen employees before entering work areas. The company also found ways to keep the medical staff comfortable who were not used to working long hours outside in Michigan winter weather, by providing outdoor heaters to combat the harsh weather and food service brought to them.
Under MAG’s KEEPS Program, once inside the work area, employees of the plant are provided a 24/7 fully functioning home away from home. The areas are structured to keep 10-20 personnel safe in the living areas. Constant cleaning, including bedding, is an essential part of the program, as well as food service, with protocols to isolate cleaning and cooking staff from the plant personnel while ensuring food service needs were met without delays.
“We have all been faced with unprecedented challenges during this pandemic,” said Masserant. “We are proud to add any assistance we can to protecting those who need our help the most.”
Masserant said the Mid-American Group is offering their services to all Governmental and industrial industries. “Now that we have successfully implemented this Program, we feel confident that we can help keep all industries up and running by keeping staff and personnel safe and comfortable, maintaining containment, and not lose any man hours,” he said.
