The barge Huron Spirit delivers salt from Windsor, Ontario, to the Port of Monroe’s riverfront dock. These photos were taken with a quadcopter, or drone, that the port bought recently. Port Director Paul LeMarre said the new technology will give a better sense of situational awareness when maneuvering barges in the port; previously such viewpoints were available only by renting private aircraft. The photo at left shows the tug Sharon M I delivering salt to the port’s riverfront dock. Thanks to last year’s dredging, this was the first fully loaded vessel to turn around in the turning basin in years and use the riverfront dock for the first time in decades. This tug and barge owned by McKeil Marine Ltd. of Hamilton, Ontario, brought four loads, carrying roughly 10,000 tons of cargo each.
